Visit Report: Light: Works from Tate's Collection at acmi

突然こういった類のブログもこちらに残していこうと考えた。毎日書いているブログとは別に、せっかくデザインの自分だけのポートフォリオサイトがあるのだから私が良いと感じたものもデザインに影響すると考えてこちらに書き残しておけば良いかと思ったので。

建築を見に街歩きをするのも大好きだが私はとにかくよく美術館に行く。その時いる街で何か展覧会があれば必ず足を運ぶし最近で言うと、NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) で開催されていたThe Picasso Centuryを観に行った。今年のメルボルンは芸術で言うとかなり豊作だと思う。

I love walking around the city to glimpse beautiful architecture, but I often go to art exhibitions too. Recently, I went to the exhibition, 'The Picasso Century' at the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria). Melbourne has been working great on having great sets of collections this year.

さて今日はacmi　（オーストラリア映像博物館）に、Light: Works from Tate's Collectionというコレクションを見に行った。

Today, I went to acmi (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) to see the collection "Light: Works from Tate's Collection".

Tateのコレクションの中から、200年以上の時代を超えて、材料、主題両方の面から'Light;光'を探求してきたアーティストの作品が集められている。作品数としては大きな展覧会ではなかったが、ポイントを押さえた良い作品ばかりだったと思う。今回のブログでは私が気になった作品を一つ一つ掘っていきたい。

The exhibition featured works from Tate's collection by artists who have explored 'light' as materials and as a subject matter for more than 200 years. Although it was not a pretty large-scale exhibition in terms of the number of works exhibited, I thought the works were very well curated and on to the point. In this blog, I would like to explore the works that caught my attention one by one.

まず最初に言及したいのがこちらの作品である。

Lilliane Lijn の、Liquid Reflections （液体反射）と言う作品である。

これ、映像で見るとわかるのだけれど、

少し真ん中が窪んだような透明な皿のような台に、二つガラスの玉が乗っていて、どう言うわけか近づいたり離れたり、永遠に揺れ続ける。そして部屋の中にはその反射が写り、わたしたちはただそれを眺める。なんて美しいのだろうかと思った。ずっとそこにいたかった。こう言う展示は、一回部屋を出てもまた戻りたくなるような引力がある。材料を見ると、水、とも書いてあったので気になって調べてみると、カットしたドラム缶の中に水を入れてその上にターンテーブルを置いてそれを電力で回している。光と水の独特な反射も相待って美しい。流れているのに止まっているかのような、引力のある、繰り返し。

The first work I loved was this 'Liquid Reflections' from Lilliane Lijn.

Two glass balls are placed on a transparent plate-like platform with a slight curve towards the centre, and somehow they keep moving closer and further apart, forever swaying. The room was filled with reflections of the lights, and we just can not keep our eyes away from it. How beautiful. I could have stayed there forever. This sort of installation has an attraction that gets you to return to the room even after you have left it. The materials are cut drum filled with water and a turntable placed on top of it, which was rotated by electric power. The unique reflections of the lights and water are just so calming to witness.

私の好きなVilhelm Hammershoiも3枚ほどあった。彼の作品で一番好きなのはかの有名なカーテンが風に吹かれているものだけれどこれも素敵だと思った。不思議にちょっと歪んだ窓枠やドアの線が味を出している。光があるのは外なのに、中に入ってくる時それが美しくまるで床の模様の一部のように、わたしたちを癒す。綺麗な瞬間だよね。どんな家にも起こりうること。誰でも何かを思い出す絵を描くことが彼はできる。

There were also a couple paintings by my absolute favorite, Vilhelm Hammershoi. My best favourite from him is the famous blowing curtains' one, but I thought this one was also nice. The alignment of the window frame and the door are somewhat distorted. The light is coming from outside, but when it comes into inside, it is beautiful and soothing, as if it were part of the pattern on the floor. It's a beautiful moment. It can happen in any house. He can paint a picture that reminds anyone about their nostalgic past.

あとは圧巻のモネ。モネ。モネは実際に見るとすごいなといつも思う。近づいたり離れたりしているうちにその柔らかな色彩とタッチからは想像できないほどの感情や奥行きや時間の流れがそこに秘められていることに気づく。青いのに、青じゃない、赤なのに、赤に見えない、私は何を見ている、ああただ美しい、となる。私が世紀の怪盗なら盗みたくなるほどの美しさであった。好き嫌いあると思いますが。私は、すごいなあ、といつも思う。圧巻。観察力も根気も情熱も凄すぎる。

Then there is Monet. I always think Monet is amazing when I see the real work in the exhibition. As you move towards and out from his paintings, you realize that they contain more emotion, depth, and time that you can not even imagine from their soft colors and touch. It's blue, but it's not blue, it's red, but it doesn't look red, what am I looking at? These Monet effects are just beautiful. If I were the thief of the century, I would have stolen it. His passion towards the careful observation, patience and passion is just something no one can do like him.

Then there was this Kandinsky, and finally,

こちら。

James Turrellと言う人のBlueという作品だった。　建築でもアートでもあるこちらは、ただパネルの奥に青い光が設置してあるだけなのだけれど、部屋にそれしかないという事実が私の頭をすごくクリアにした。これでいいんだよな、と思う。色々足したり曲げたり増やしたりしすぎなんですよ世界は。一つの「光」という現象に力と魅力を見出し、いかにそれを祝福するか。とても良いと思いました。

実は大学のチューターの先生に勧めてもらって行ったのですがとても良かったな。光についてはまだまだ考えること学ぶことがありますね。

This installation.

It was a work called "Blue" by James Turrell.　This work, which is both architecture and art, is just a blue light installed behind a panel, but the fact that it is the only light in the room made my head very clear. I thought, "This is what I need. The world is all about adding, twisting, and adding too many things." How can we find power and fascination in a single phenomenon called "light" and how can we celebrate it?
